General guidelines for grading to Australian Standards

At AST our flooring products are manufactured and graded by experienced graders in accordance with Australian Standard 2796.2 - 2006 “ Timber – Hardwood – Sawn and Milled Products”.
In April 2001 AST became one of the first hardwood processors in NSW to qualify for membership of the prestigious Hardwood Quality Certification Scheme administered by the independent certification organization Australian Timber Industry Certification (ATIC). The registered ATIC trademark on our product packaging and documentation signifies that our flooring has been manufactured under ATIC’s rigorous quality control program and that it lis certified to comply with the specific grade.

Our flooring products other than TimberLay® overlay are available in a range of grades to suit your specific requirements.

Light Feature Grade1. Light Feature Grade

As per “Select Grade” description in AS 2796.2 - 2006
This grade is ideal for use in formal living and reception areas or in commercial developments where a uniform and consistent appearance is required.*

Moderate Feature Grade2. Moderate Feature Grade

As per “Medium Feature Grade” description in AS 2796.2 - 2006
Deliberately selected to show a limited amount of interesting natural growth characteristics like tight gum veins, tight knots and insect marks, a moderate feature floor provides a subtle reminder of the timber’s natural forest origins. It is a popular and practical choice for family, living and rumpus rooms, as well as bedrooms and office spaces where the occasional scuffs and minor scratches caused by daily foot traffic are better disguised amongst the random features in the timber.*

Full Feature Grade

3. Full Feature Grade

As per “High Feature Grade” description in AS 2796.2 - 2006
Full feature floors have lots of interesting natural growth features dispersed throughout the timber displaying a variety of permissible features and because of this provides a unique looking floor which works well in high traffic areas in residential and industrial buildings and in any room where a relaxed warm rustic look is sought.*

AST also produces SigNature Grade non structural overlay flooring in 19 mm only. SigNature is a robust, naturally featured unique looking floor that captures the best characteristics Mother Nature and hardwood timber has to offer.

Signed by nature it highlights the natural beauty of timber, featuring gum pockets, knots, checks, holes, gum veins (both tight & loose), black spec, inactive insect galleries, pin holes, curly grain & stain. It also includes minor machining imperfections, tear out, miss and slight bowing.

SigNature is graded to AST’s own specification, offering a combination of these characteristics and features and is suitable for both domestic and commercial situations giving a cost effective, environmentally sound high end product at a value for money price.
